Three bird species cause most of the nuisance bird problems we handle in Wood County: pigeons, European starlings, and chimney swifts. Each one is a different situation and needs a different approach. Getting the species right matters because chimney swifts, unlike pigeons and starlings, are federally protected during active nesting and cannot be removed while nesting is underway.
Pigeons are the most common commercial bird problem in Parkersburg. They roost and nest on building ledges, HVAC equipment, roof structures, and under bridge overpasses. Pigeon droppings are corrosive to building materials, create slip hazards, and carry fungal pathogens including Histoplasma capsulatum, the same fungus found in bat guano.
Pigeon control methods we use:
Starlings are cavity nesters. They squeeze into soffit vents, attic vents, and gaps in building siding and build large nests that block ventilation, create fire risks in dryer vents, and attract parasites. A starling nest in a dryer vent is a fire hazard. They also contaminate gutters and insulation with droppings and nesting material.
Starling exclusion focuses on blocking vent openings with appropriate vent covers and sealing all gaps where they are entering. We remove existing nests and install bird-proof vent covers that maintain airflow while keeping birds out.
Chimney swifts are an entirely different case. They are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which means you cannot disturb active nests or eggs. Period. If swifts are actively nesting in your chimney, the only legal option is to wait until the nesting season ends, typically by late August or September.
What we can do: inspect the chimney, document the situation, and install a quality chimney cap after the nesting season ends to prevent their return the following year. We also make sure the flue and damper are properly sealed so swifts cannot access the living space.
Not while they are actively nesting. Chimney swifts and their nests are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Disturbing active nests, eggs, or young is a federal offense. We can install a chimney cap after the nesting season ends to prevent their return next year.
Yes. Pigeon droppings can carry Histoplasma capsulatum, a fungus that causes histoplasmosis, a serious respiratory illness. Large accumulations of droppings require proper protective equipment to clean up. This is not a DIY job if the accumulation is significant.
No. Bird spikes deter birds from landing but do not injure them. They are one of the most commonly recommended humane deterrents for pigeon and starling control on building ledges.
